SD - Mammoth Site - Hot Springs

The Mammoth Site is an indoor excavation site with fossils of 59 Columbian and wooly mammoths, so far. The site was found during a residential housing site development. The developer knew that he found something extraordinary and through his benevolence, he sold the site for the same price he paid to a Non-Profit organization to develop and excavate the site. They completely enclosed the site to preserve the bones and permit year round excavation. There are skeleton remains of complete mammoths. They expect that there will be many more than the 59 that they have currently found beneath the ones they are currently uncovering. Click on any of the thumbnail pictures to see an expanded view.
