John and Pat’s Boundary Waters

 Canoe Area Adventure 2006

Introduction

This website contains pictures taken during John and Pat Dickinson’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) Adventure of 2006.  We left home on June 3, 2006 and returned home on June 13th.   The purpose of the trip was two-fold. First we wanted to check out the area around Tower, MN and Lake Vermilion as we will be renting a houseboat on Lake Vermilion in August of this year.  Second, we wanted to spend a few days in the BWCA near Tower, MN as we have not been in this area of the BWCA before.

Below are a few statistics from our trip:

          Paddling Days:                       11
          Rain Days:                              3
          Camping Nights:                    11
          Miles paddled:                       70
          Portages:                                5
          Total Portage distance:                   1.87 miles
          Shortest Portage:                            0.19 miles
          Longest Portage:                            0.53 miles

The trip was SUPER!!!  We had originally planned on spending most of our time paddling and camping on Lake Vermilion to check it out thoroughly before our houseboat trip in August.  As it turned out, the fishing in the BWCA was so great that I could not bring myself to leave there.  We spent a total of about 3 days on Lake Vermilion, about a day and one-half on the way in and a day and one-half on the way out.  The remainder of the time we were on or near Trout Lake in the BWCA.

Pictures Organized by Topic

An assortment of the pictures that we took on our trip are grouped in various topics. Use this link to access the Topic Menu.  From the Topic Menu, thumbnails of each picture are provided to use as poke points to access an expanded view of that picture.  Use your browser’s forward and back buttons to navigate through the pictures and return to this page.

Trip Diary and Other Data

Pat kept a daily hand written diary.  The Diary has been typed up and is organized by day and can be found by clicking here.  We had our GPS receiver with us and kept a set of waypoints where we stayed each night.  The longitude and latitude of each night’s campsite can be found by clicking here.
